Level 2 Award/Diploma in Art and Design (Fashion and Textiles) City of Bristol College

This one-year diploma course will introduce you to basic Fashion and Textiles Design practices, skills and techniques.

You will have the opportunity to work with interesting and diverse projects while gaining a valid understanding of the subject.

You will experiment with your ideas, look at the work of other artists and designers and build a creative portfolio.

You will be given the chance to develop your skills and self-confidence in a mature, friendly and safe environment. 

The course is broad and allows you to explore a range of art and design disciplines, and help you progress to one of our Level 3 courses in Creative Arts & Media.

Who is this course for?

If you are interested in arts, crafts and design, but have little experience with the subject area then this may be the right start for you.

This course is for students who want to develop Art and Design skills. You do not need any have any previous art qualifications to enrol onto this course.

You will gain nationally recognised qualifications whilst doing something you really enjoy and build your confidence in working in the broad subject of Art and Design.

Specialist units will provide you with basic and creative skills in Fashion and Textiles, Research into a range of artists, 2D & 3D work, surface design, drawing, painting and print making.

You will have the opportunity to work on a personal project and showcase your newly developed skills within the subject.

Although the course runs alongside relevant English and Maths qualifications, you will work with vocationally relevant projects to help develop and understanding of contextual language and maths involved within the subject at industry level.

You will also develop your personal presentation, communication and organisational skills. Work experience opportunities are available.

Course entry requirements

4 x GCSEs at 3 or above including maths and/or English or equivalent or a Level 1 qualification in a relevant subject.

This will be an opportunity for you to gain valuable information about the course and give you the opportunity to ask any questions you may have. 

You will provide a copy of your last school report and / or a reference from an employer or relevant professional other. This is to ensure we can support you to be able to achieve well on the course.

How is the course delivered and assessed?

This course is part of a wider study programme, which includes a tutorial and personal development element, work experience opportunities through outside set projects and design challenges, development of English and Maths Skills through embedded activities.

Your work will be assessed through written and practical means. You will present the work in sketchbooks, digital blogs and in different practical formats. You will be assessed on you development and outcomes.

Regular portfolio assessment throughout the year, by which you will always know how you are progressing on course and given many opportunities to improve your performance.

Assessments in English and Maths at a level appropriate to you and are taken in small groups in classrooms. 

Future career and study opportunities

Successful achievement of a Level 2 programme can open up all a range of subject areas to you, even if they are not related to Art and Design. The most common progression from the Level 2 Diploma is on to one of our creative Level 3 programmes.

You can also move onto another level 2 course and explore new areas of the creative sectors, such as Creative Digital Media.

As part of your tutorial aspect on the course, your tutors will work with you to help you in your desired progression route, regardless of what this is.

You may need to buy materials or pay for educational trips. If you are on a limited income, you may be eligible to receive help with these costs from our Learner Support Funding Bursary.
