Foundation Degree in Youth and Community Work City of Bristol CollegeThis programme has been designed to meet the needs of the workforce. It provides a means by which practitioners, employed within a learning environment, can obtain a recognised qualification specific to their field and become more effective in their role by an increased reflection on practice.

Who is this course for?
This Foundation Degree course is for adults who work or volunteer in informal educational settings e.g Youth Workers.
What you'll learn
You will develop an understanding of the variety of roles played by professionals and practitioners in both formal and informal educational settings, enabling you to locate your own place and contribution through developing personal and professional skills.
A broad and balanced knowledge and understanding of the principal features and theoretical perspectives of working with children and young people. You will develop your knowledge of inclusive educational practice from beyond your specific setting into the local, national and international arena.
A reflective practice module based on professional standards within the workforce will underpin the study period to ensure strong links are constantly reviewed between theory and practice Modules.
Year 1: Children and Young People’s Development Rights and Participation Promoting the Wellbeing of Children and Young People in Practice Reflective Professional Practice
Year 2: Reflective Professional Practice Researched Informed Practice Managing Youth and Community Work Practice Social Theory and Social Action
Course entry requirements
56 UCAS Tariff points from BTECs, A Levels etc e.g Level 3 Diploma in Youth Work Paid employment/volunteering in an appropriate setting.
Five GCSEs at Grade 9/4 (A*-C) or equivalent – to include English and Maths. Overseas students must have IELTS 6.0 or equivalent Satisfactory DBS clearance. Students who do not meet the minimum academic entry requirements but have significant life and/or work experience will be considered on the basis of evidence of personal, professional and educational experience, which indicate an applicant’s ability to meet the demands of a Foundation Degree.
How is the course delivered and assessed?
This is a two year course which will be delivered one day a week. Teaching is centered around student engagement and enabling the student’s voice.
Students will be asked to contribute to content which will be led and managed by tutors to ensure that learning objectives are met. Small group work and seminars will support all learners to take part in sessions and as the programme runs alongside practice, there will be explicit links between theory and real-life experiences.
Assessments are recognised as part of the learning process and will be supported by opportunities for formative assessment. The first year will taught alongside students from the Cert HE Inclusive Practice in Education and Youth Work and the FdA Inclusive Education to enable the sharing of ideas, experiences and perspectives.
In the second year, you will continue to study with students from the FdA Inclusive Education but follow a more specialised route with two modules specifically designed around supporting learning in Youth and Community Work.
Future career and study opportunities
This qualification will provide you with increased knowledge and skills for a variety of roles within the formal and informal education sector.
Upon successful completion of the Foundation Degree, students will be able to apply for progression to a relevant Honours Degree in Education in Professional Practice at UWE. Further opportunities will then be available to undertake Teacher Training.
