International English for Adults City of Bristol College

This course is perfect for adult students who want to prepare for Cambridge English exams: PET (B1), First Certificate (B2), Advanced (C1), Proficiency (C2) and the IELTS exam, or those students who want to improve their English in all skills. 

Our evening courses for Advanced (C1) run once a year starting September (12 weeks), and January (15 weeks). The Proficiency course (C2) and IELTS preparation courses run for 15 weeks once a year starting in January. Classes are held once a week for 2.5 hours.

All students receive a college certificate at the end of the course, and there is the option to take the Cambridge exam or IELTS exam at a local designated centre.

These courses are for adults residing in Britain who want to improve their English.

If you need English to help you to find a better job, progress in your career, or study at university, our International English for Adults courses can help you to achieve your goal.

What you'll learn

As a part-time student on an International English course, you will:

  • Study grammar and vocabulary related to your level of study
  • Develop your reading and writing skills Improve your communication skills
  • Make use of free access to online exam practice and general language resources (Moodle)
  • Familiarise yourself with the requirements of the Cambridge or IELTS exam (with the option of taking the exam at the end of the course)

To join one of these courses, you will undertake an assessment to check your current level of English.

How is the course delivered and assessed?

Our morning English courses start at low intermediate level (PET) and progress through to upper intermediate (FCE).

A college certificate is issued at the end of the course and there is also the option take the Cambridge Preliminary (B1) and First Certificate (B2) exams. The classes are held twice a week, for a total of 5 hours.

There are two courses per year starting in September (12 weeks) and January (15 weeks). Our evening Cambridge CAE (C1) exam preparation course runs twice a year starting September (12 weeks) and January (15 weeks). CPE and IELTS preparation courses run for 15 weeks once a year starting in January. Classes of 2.5 hours are held once a week.

You will be awarded a college certificate or you take your Cambridge or IELTS exam at a designated exam centre in Bristol.

Evening courses: Course Time CPE (C2) Wednesday 6.00-8.30pm (start January for 15 weeks) CAE (C1) Thursdays 6.00-8.30pm (start September for 12 weeks and start January for 15 weeks IELTS preparation (B2+) Tuesdays 6.00- 8.30pm (start January for 15 weeks) Morning courses: Course Time PET/ Low Intermediate (B1) Tuesday/Friday 9.30am – noon FCE/Mid- Upper Intermediate (B2) Monday/Thursday 9.30am – noon B1 and B2 morning courses start September for 12 weeks and January for 15 weeks.

Future career and study opportunities

Cambridge certificates and IELTS are widely accepted in order to progress onto a higher level course, including higher education, a vocational course or employment.
