Who is this course for?

This Level 2 Barbering Professional Apprenticeship aims to provide you with a range of essential and practical skills and knowledge, which will equip you to competently work within the barbering industry.

The skills include carrying out services such as; shampooing, conditioning, cutting men’s hair, cutting men’s facial hair, drying and finishing men’s hair and creating basic outlines in the hair.

Following successful completion of this apprenticeship, you will be qualified to work in a number of employment destinations such as: barber shops, hairdressing salons, hotels or cruise ships.

This apprenticeship is suitable for anyone over the age of 16 years and over. You do not need any previous knowledge or experience to start this apprenticeship.

What you'll learn

You will study the following mandatory content:

  • Principles of hairdressing and barbering services
  • Shampoo, condition and treat the hair and scalp
  • Cut hair using basic barbering techniques
  • Cut facial hair to shape using basic techniques
  • Dry and finish men’s hair
  • Create basic outlines and detailing in hair

Course entry requirements

GCSE Maths and English at grade 4 or above. Alternatively if you don’t have these you can complete Functional skills alongside your training.

How is the course delivered and assessed?

Monthly workshops in the college salon at the South Bristol Skills Academy in Hengrove.

On the job training within your workplace, that being a barber shop or salon that provides barbering services.

You will be assigned an apprenticeship trainer from the college who will work with you and your employer to mentor you and facilitate workplace training.

After completion of your apprenticeship, you will then complete an end point assessment with an external assessor from City and Guilds where you will gain a Pass/Merit or Distinction if successful.

Future career and study opportunities

Achievement of this qualification demonstrates to an employer that you have the essential skills and knowledge of health & safety, customer service and also the necessary technical skills to be employed as a Barber.

This qualification could lead to a job as a Barber working in one of the following establishments:

  • Continue your career in a barber shop
  • Become a manager of a barber shop
  • Work within the hotel/cruise ship industry

Additional costs

It is likely that you may need to pay for your own travel to and from the college workshops and any stationery you may need.

You will also need to purchase barbering equipment such as scissors, combs etc that would cost approximately £60 depending on your choice of equipment quality.
