Level 3 Diploma in Software Development City of Bristol College

The Software Development Level 3 Diploma is designed for adults returning to education or those who want to upskill for a new pathway.

The qualification will allow the learners to explore the fundamentals of software development:

– Programming Implementation
– Python Programming
– Object-Orientated
– Programming
– Robot Technology
– JavaScript
– Maths for Computing
– Software Testing
– Project Management and Career Support

Students will use the online platform from our partnership organisation, Code Institute, to learn and practice the fundamentals of software development away from the classroom, usually at home and attend college once a month to complete the assessments for each unit.

The course prepares the students for employment or to go on to the Level 5 Web Application Development.

Funding is available for our students (this depends on employment status and/or overall earnings). Please enquire with us.

Who is this course for?

This course is designed for anyone who is aged 19+ and wants to start a new career in software development or move onto the Level 5 Web Application Development.

The aim of the course is to be accessible through a blended model, with learning content available through Code Institute’s sophisticated platform and supported and facilitated by classroom-based learning here at City of Bristol College, once a month.

Our students enjoy the community feel, with them coming in and having support from other students in the group and teachers. There are always ways to keep in touch with the teachers and other students on the course for support using our software.

There is the availability to have 1-2-1s throughout the course to discuss any concerns regarding the curriculum. Whether you are working or currently seeking employment, this course is ideal for helping you to make the transition and move into a new career.

On-demand support is available to the students.

Course entry requirements

A good standard of English and Maths.

Learners are expected to complete a 5-day coding challenge.

The coding challenge will allow the student to understand what is expected in the full course and to see whether they study through the online platform.

Regarding funding, most students are eligible through specific employment status/earnings or benefits.

How is the course delivered and assessed?

The course is delivered through a blended approach, where once a month, in the evening, students will come into college to complete an assessment that they have been studying for through the online platform.

The classroom-based evening allows us to have a face-to-face discussion with other students and to have a 1-2-1 with teachers if required. This opportunity also promotes a community experience and enables you to be part of a learning community, which students enjoy and encourage.

When the course is not classroom-focused, there is still an opportunity to have 1-2-1s with the teachers to discuss any concerns and make sure that the students are on track to complete, we have multiple communication tools we use to keep in contact with each other.

City of Bristol’s approach is to make sure everyone feels part of the community that we are building on the course.

Future career and study opportunities

This course will support you to enter employment within differing roles in the digital and creative industries and other industries requiring specific digital and IT skills within Software Development.

Our students are also encouraged to develop their skills further and to study the Level 5 Diploma in Web Application Development.
