Who is this course for?

The course will benefit individuals that may want to pursue employment in the outdoor industry. It could also be beneficial for people wishing to join the military due to the transferable skills you will learn whilst on the course.

What you'll learn

Learners are undertaking the vocational equivalent of GCSEs.

To obtain their certificate, they must complete units, such as: Fitness, Outdoor Activities, Health and Safety and Teamwork & Leadership which are assessed through practicals, presentations, teaching, written assignments and external assessment.

Course entry requirements

4 x GCSEs at 3 or above including maths and/or English or equivalent or a Level 1 qualification in a relevant subject.

We will invite you to a Course information meeting event where you will receive information, advice, and guidance about the course you have applied for. This will be an opportunity for you to gain valuable information about the course and give you the opportunity to ask any questions you may have. 

 You will provide a copy of your last school report and / or a reference from an employer or relevant professional other. This is to ensure we can support you to be able to achieve well on the course.

How is the course delivered and assessed?

You will learn from our experienced and supportive teachers through a mix of classroom work, practical activities and visits. You will also undertake volunteering or work experience.

You will be assessed in a variety of ways to give you the best opportunity to demonstrate your skills throughout the year. For example, this will include fitness tests, observation of practical activities and coursework assignments.

Maths and English abilities will be assessed through tests and exams.

Future career and study opportunities

Your next steps will depend on the level of learning and personal development that you reach and the qualifications that you have gained. You could progress on to a Level 3 course, or you might prefer to go directly into employment.

Additional costs

As a City of Bristol College student, you may incur additional costs to attend your course. For example, you may likely need to pay for travel and stationery. For the Level 2 Sport (Outdoor Adventure) you will be required to purchase City of Bristol College branded activity wear. You will also contribute towards a gym membership and you will be provided with outdoor clothing for your practical aspects of the course. This is also included in your course fee.

Many courses offer learning opportunities that you may need to pay for. This may include things like study visits and visiting speakers. We will let you know in advance if there will be additional costs. If you are on a limited income, you may be able to receive help from our Learner Support Funding Bursary.
