Web Applications Development – Level 5 Diploma (Online) City of Bristol College

The Level 5 Diploma in Web Applications Development (Online) offers a flexible and industry-focused opportunity to study a qualification designed and developed by industry specialists.

You will be supported throughout your studies by dedicated course instructors from City of Bristol College, alongside online technical support, in-app tutors from Code Institute and an active student learning community via Discord, where you can engage with peers, tutors, and support staff.

This course is designed to develop the practical skills required to design, develop, build and test web-based software applications. The curriculum focuses on the most relevant and in-demand coding languages, frameworks and tools used in front-end, back-end and full-stack development.

You will gain industry-ready skills to pursue roles such as:

  • Web / Software Application Developer

  • Front-End Developer

  • Back-End Developer

  • Full-Stack Developer

  • QA Engineer

  • Software Support Engineer

No prior coding experience is required.

We run six cohorts throughout the academic year, enrolling new students every two months from September (excluding July and August). This flexible intake model allows you to start at a time that suits you and follow an individualised learning plan.

Throughout the course, you will develop a strong understanding of front-end development and full-stack frameworks, including tools such as Django, as well as data-centric and interactive front-end development.

The course content is written by Code Institute and accredited by Gateway Qualifications. Applicants must complete Code Institute’s 5-step Coding Challenge before applying.

Who is this course for?

This qualification is a pathway to employment for those who want to work in the tech industry. It gives students the skills and experience needed to take up roles in software/web application development, junior full-stack/front-end/back-end development, junior quality assurance, engineer or support engineer.

It is suitable for those with no previous coding experience and for those who want to refresh their knowledge with the most relevant coding languages. This is an online course provided by City of Bristol College along with supported online learning and self-study using the Code Institute Built Learner Management System (LMS).

With the online delivery feature, students will receive dedicated support from an instructor at City of Bristol College, which will be arranged together when needed, access to live chat with Code Institute tutors for technical assistance (available Monday to Friday from 8:00 AM to 6:30 PM, and Saturday to Sunday from 8:00 AM to 5:30 PM), and full access to a vibrant Slack community for networking, collaboration, and peer-to-peer support. 

What you'll learn

The qualification is made up of 4 units that progress you through front-end and back-end processes, learning coding process and flow.

The units are:

User-Centric Frontend Development
This unit aims to provide learners with the knowledge and skills needed to build a front-end web application. It includes understanding the principles of responsive design, documentation and effective layout of content.

Interactive Frontend Development
This unit aims to develop the knowledge and skills needed to build a dynamic, interactive front-end web application. It includes understanding user input and control when interacting with a web application. It also includes understanding the principles of manual testing for debugging.

Data-Centric Development
This focuses on understanding and developing the practical skills to build a back-end web application. Topics covered include data storage and data management using relational and non-relational databases.

Full Stack Frameworks with Django
Learners build on their existing skills and learn how to integrate them effectively to build a full-stack web application. The unit covers the use of frameworks, APIs, automated testing, persistent storage, user authentication and e-commerce functionality.

Course entry requirements

  • You must be aged 19 or over
  • Applicants must complete the 5-step coding challenge set by Code Institute

There are no formal entry qualification requirements. Following your application, you will be invited to complete an online competency test. This course is ideal for beginners with ambitions to work in web development, as well as for those already working in the industry who wish to gain a recognised qualification to enhance their career prospects.

How is the course delivered and assessed?

The course delivery has been designed to be flexible and structured to support students in completing it alongside their day-to-day commitments and lives.

From the start of the course, students will have access to the learning content and each will have regular weekly sessions across the first month on Thursday evenings as an extended onboarding/introduction and with focused tasks and activities aimed at making your project ready.

Following the group sessions, you will then have instructor-led sessions, which will be set around your schedule and allow you targeted time with an instructor to review the progress you are making on the platform, challenges, barriers, ideas and actions to help you meet the Milestone project Deadlines as well as support you through assignment project planning, study skills and academic progression.

The online delivery includes live tutor support and a highly engaged student community through Slack, which allows students to access peer support, career development advice and personal industrial mentoring.

The Learner Management System provided by Code Institute is always available and enables students to learn and study when and where works for them, and includes a student care team who can provide day-to-day support.

You will be assessed through four projects which cover different aspects of web application development.

Each milestone project is designed to build knowledge and skills for the key stages of building a fully functioning web application using a full-stack framework.

These projects form a portfolio which to showcase learner’s practical skills, knowledge and competency to employers.

The work is marked internally and then verified externally by Gateway Qualifications. All units are marked Pass, Merit or Distinction.

This qualification is designed to open learners up to a career in tech.

Graduates of the course will continue to develop their skills in their new role and be able to support them in finding a specialist area suited to their personal strengths and preferences.

This course offers learners the skills and confidence to apply for one of the tens of thousands of unfilled vacancies in tech advertised in the UK every week. It also provides opportunities for progression for graduates in both the tech sector and other sectors, including health, construction, engineering, finance, education, transport, entertainment, retail and hospitality.

The cost of the course is £5421, and is eligible for an Advanced Learning Loan. Information on how the loan can be found on the gov.uk website.
