YMCA Level 3 Diploma in Gym Instructing and Personal Training (Practitioner) City of Bristol CollegeThis one-year, full-time course will equip you with the skills, knowledge, competence and qualifications that you need to work unsupervised as a professional personal trainer in a variety of settings in the UK and globally.

Who is this course for?
This course is for young people aged 16-18, who have a passion for sport and fitness and would like to gain a career within the Health and Fitness industry.
What you'll learn
You will develop a thorough understanding of how to build and maintain health and fitness through exercise and a healthy lifestyle.
You will learn how the body works and about the principles of nutrition, and you will learn how to incorporate this knowledge into an exercise and activity programme to help clients achieve their goals.
You will learn how to design, deliver and adapt personal training programmes for adults of all ages and abilities, using a variety of exercise and physical activities.
You will also understand how to communicate with clients effectively and how to motivate them to adhere to a personalised exercise programme.
Course entry requirements
5 x GCSEs at 4 or above, or a Level 2 equivalent in a relevant subject. You will have gained either English and/or Maths at GCSE 4 or above, or Level 2 Functional skills in English and/or Maths.
We will invite you to a course information meeting event where you will receive information, advice and guidance about the course you have applied for. This will be an opportunity for you to gain valuable information about the course and give you the opportunity to ask any questions you may have.
You will provide a copy of your last school report and / or a reference from an employer or relevant professional other this will include attendance. This is to ensure we can support to be able to achieve well on the course. Applicants with 85% or below attendance will have been deemed not to have met this criteria.
All applicants are given an opportunity to discuss any evidence based mitigating circumstances that may have affected the reference / school report.
If you are applying for a creative practice-based course, you will be invited to bring a portfolio of work that demonstrated what you have done in your previous courses.

How is the course delivered and assessed?
You will be taught by highly qualified teachers who have a wealth of industry experience and specialist knowledge.
Your time will be split between classroom learning and practical activities in the gym and sports centre, where you will put your knowledge into practice, by developing and evaluating training programmes.
You will be continuously assessed throughout the course by a mix of coursework, practical assignments and written tests, with a multiple-choice online exam at the end of the course.
If you are studying English and Maths, these subjects will be assessed through tests and exams.
Future career and study opportunities
This is an internationally recognised, professional qualification, which will enable you to work as a personal trainer.
You might work for a gym, sports club or leisure venue, or you might prefer to be self-employed.
You could also progress to university to study Sports Science, or you could gain further specialist qualifications within the health and fitness industry; for example in Yoga or Pilates.
Additional costs
You will need to buy sports clothing and a uniform whilst contributing to the costs of educational trips, this will be approximately £250 for the year.
