Second-year Art and Design students from City of Bristol College recently took part in The World Reimagined, a country-wide art education project marking Black History Month.
More than 100 large globe structures have gone up in seven cities across the UK, and will be on display from 13 August to 31 October 2022. The World Reimagined aims to educate more people on the Transatlantic Slave Trade and the impact it continues to have on us all, and to inspire pride in being Black and British.
City of Bristol College’s globe is entitled Reimagine the Future, and depicts a world free from racism. It is composed of birds to symbolise freedom and eternity. The piece will be displayed in our College Green reception, where everyone is invited to reflect on the significance on the project and contribute their thoughts.
Reflecting on the theme of Reimagine the Future, one student said: “[it] gave us free reign to imagine the society we can create when we have a full understanding of our shared history. We thought about the place the UK can hold in the world when it acknowledges its past, and who we can be as people when we give full dignity to all.”
Student Kaiden said working on the project had been “eye-opening” and pointed out that while we may know famous names such as Malcolm X, we don’t always know their stories and fully understand their contributions to society.
Student Macie added that the project was “a good experience” and “a learning curve but a real confidence-booster” given the short time between the beginning of the academic year and the project deadline.
