About the course

The programme has been developed to meet the needs of practising managers and those who aspire to a career in management. The qualification links to the NVQs in management at level 5 and forms part of a professional qualification pathway for managers.

The qualification has been designed with regard progression onto further programmes, especially the CMI Level 7 Extended Diploma in Strategic Management and Leadership.


The Level 5 Diploma is designed to fulfil one or more of the following:

• To provide a professional qualification for students who are managers or who wish to move into management positions

• To provide the knowledge an understanding which underpins the NVQ in Management at level 5.

• To develop the skills of practising managers and those aspiring management positions and promote good practice in management

• To provide progression route to more advanced management qualifications and provide students with the basis for further development

Entry Requirements

You must have a good standard of English and maths and you may have a range of qualifications, or gained experience in your professional role or other relevant training.

  1. Full or part time employment (continuous voluntary/charity role could be considered too)This condition must be met.

  2. Level 4 qualification in any discipline.

  3. Some experience in a supervisory/ managerial/ coaching/mentoring role (1-3 years).

If one of the conditions 2 or 3 is not met, a candidate needs to be interviewed

There are nine units in this qualification including:

  • Personal development as a manager and leader
  • Information based decision making
  • Practices of resource management
  • Meeting stakeholder and quality needs
  • Conducting a management project
  • Managing ideas and innovation
  • Plus 3 other units
Who is it for?

The course is aimed at people from a wide range of different workplaces. It is not essential to be in a management role already, but it is important to be in a job role where you can draw on your workplace experiences and knowledge to be able to apply the content of the course. Successful students on this course have come from all sectors of the economy, cover a wide age range and have varied educational backgrounds.

How Is this course assessed?

The course will be taught and assessed using a variety of methods which will include:

• Essays

• Assignments

• Case Studies

• Presentations

• ViVa Voce

All modules are assessed by coursework, there are no examinations. Some modules are assessed by an assignment based on the workplace, others are based on case studies or practical tasks. A typical assessment for a unit would be a report into observed styles of leadership. Most reports have suggested a word count of 3,000 words.


What could I do next?

This course progresses naturally to the CMI Level 7 Extended Diploma in Strategic Management and Leadership. some students may also choose other routes, such as CIPD in Human Resources, Marketing or an NVQ at Level 5 or 7.
