Work-based training

We provide a comprehensive range of work-based training courses resulting in vocational qualifications such as National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs), Certificates, Awards and Diplomas.

Work-based training is flexible and suitable - it's for people who already have skills they would like to develop, as well as those starting at the beginning.

These courses are work-related qualifications that demonstrate competence in a particular field of work to national occupational standards. They show that employees have the skills and knowledge needed to do a job effectively.


NVQs comprise several units which can be tailored to reflect an employee's job and the skills they need to perform. Each unit is made up of a number of national occupational standards that cover the main aspects of their job, including current best practice, adaptability to meet future requirements and the knowledge and understanding that underpin competent performance.

Assessment for an NVQ is carried out in the workplace and is designed to fit into the working day so employees don't need much time away from work. Skills are assessed through:

  • Work-based collection of evidence
  • Workplace observation
  • Investigation of skills by a College assessor
  • There are no tests or exams - certification is based purely on evidence of skills.

Professional short courses

We also run a full programme of short courses for professional development. Designed to help employers develop the skills of their workers, these courses are offered in a variety of subjects across all sectors.

Qualification and credit framework

This framework is the official way of recognising achievement across England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Credits are awarded for different units and qualifications, allowing employers to compare the vocational level of their employees with different vocational qualifications and educational standards such as GCSEs, A Levels and Degrees.
