British Sign Language (BSL) Level 1 City of Bristol College

A British Sign Language (BSL) course for adults in Bristol.

This course is designed to enable you to develop the basic skills to communicate with deaf people. To get the most from your studies, it is essential that you commit to attending all classes and to practise in your own time to reinforce your learning.

Who is this course for?

This course is for anyone including parents, family, friends and work colleagues who would like to learn some basic sign language skills to aid communication.

The course is for adults aged 19+.

What you'll learn

You will focus on vocabulary relating to everyday language to communicate about a range of topics. You will also learn British Sign Language (BSL) grammar and structure.

Course entry requirements

This is a Level 1 course – so no experience necessary.

You will need to commit to attending all classes. In addition, you will need to support your learning with a further 26 hours of private study and practice in your own time.

You must commit to attending all classes and to regularly consolidating your learning with private study, homework and practice.

How is the course delivered and assessed?

This is an interactive course where you will participate in group and pair work.

Your progress will be assessed through three short communicative exams, one at the end of each unit.

Future career and study opportunities

Successful students can progress to British Sign Language Level 2.
