Fantastic turnout at West of England Skills Expo

Prospective students from far and wide flocked to We The Curious to speak to us about our courses and what next steps they can take in their education journey.

City of Bristol College was among 22 exhibitors to attend the first West of England Skills Expo at the city centre attraction last week.

During the event, we promoted three key areas: Health and Social Care, Digital and the journey to Net Zero. Tutors and Heads of Department from the College were on hand to offer information, advice and guidance about the courses on offer.

Students who spoke to us also took advantage of the many interactive activities and props on the stand, to give them a feel for what the course would entail.

The event was set up by the West of England Combined Authority, who promote teaching, learning and bridging the skills gap in the West of England, and was an opportunity for people to come and see the career opportunities in various areas, discuss the job market and ask key questions.

We focused on three key employment areas, one of which was IT. In 2020, there were 21,397 jobs in the IT sector advertised in the South West region. This is an increase of 5% for digital technology between 2018-2020.

Students who have studied with us have praised the support they received during their journey, with many opting to stay on with us through their studies. Twenty-year-old Computing student, Abdulkadir Adam has been here since beginning his ESOL studies in 2017 before moving onto the Level 1 Computing course in 2019.

Now in 2022, Abdulkadir is on the final stretch of his Level 3 Computing qualification and aspires to work in IT security. You can read Abdulkadir’s full story.

To read other stories from our students, such as Health and Social Care student Lauren Toms who joined the vaccine rollout, or to find out about the college’s sustainable efforts, including bespoke CPD training days, check out the news section on our website.

Guests to the event were also able to enjoy a range of activities at the science and educational centre, based in Millennium Square, which hosts more than 250 interactive exhibits.

Miss us at the expo? Don’t worry, we have an Open Event on Wednesday 30 March from 4.30-7.30pm.
