CAD: Revit Families City of Bristol College

The core knowledge for creating Families for Autodesk’s 3D BIM modeller.

This flexi-course, which you can start at any time, is for those wishing to understand how to create and manipulate Families within Revit. Being able to create your own Families, within Revit, frees you from having to use pre-made Families and is the key to truly being able to use Revit to create your own designs, or building models.

You will learn how to create, edit and document Revit Families, covering a range of family learning from: templates and sheets, to bespoke components for architecture, structures and MEP. You will be taught under the guidance of an industry-experienced, Autodesk-Certified Instructor.

Who is this course for?

This course is for those wanting to become Revit Family creators, for any or all of Revit’s disciplines: Architecture, Structure and MEP. Thereby opening up the availability to create the design elements you want to create, rather than those you can find existing families for.

What you'll learn

During this course, you will learn how to create your own Families within Revit, for all of its disciplines. This course covers features such as: making custom templates with annotation styles, creating custom schedules, creating custom walls and roofs, as well as creating your own family geometry which is the key element in the course.

Course entry requirements

To join this course, you must have previous Revit experience. You will also need enthusiasm for learning Revit Families.

You will need a working understanding of English and Maths and the ability to use Windows-based computers confidently.

Entry interview

You need to attend an interview – in person or by phone. Phone interviews can be arranged, as necessary; call 0117 3122703 or email CAD@cityofbristol.ac.uk.

If you want a college based, in-person interview, sessions are on Wednesdays at the College Green Centre, during term time, in room 6E22H, at 16:00. You do not need to book; just sign in at reception and allow upwards of an hour, in case your visit us at a busy time. Other times can be arranged, simply call or email as above.

How is the course delivered and assessed?

This course is a flexi-course which allows you to attend college as and when you can. Once enrolled, you can tailor your course timing to suit your needs. The course takes around 90 hours to complete, which must be done within a year of starting – how quickly is up to you.

At the end of the course you will be assessed through the creation of your own Revit families in a project which you will create from scratch. When successfully completed, you will receive both College and Autodesk Certificates to confirm your achievement.

Future career and study opportunities

After successfully completing this course, you will be equipped with the essential 2D/3D skills and knowledge to be able to start making your own Revit Families.

This will help you start, or progress, your career – which requires the ability to create 3D building/component models for BIM and their associated technical drawings, in a variety of construction fields. On finishing the course you can progress onto other 3D CAD courses on offer, e.g. Civil 3D, 3ds Max, Inventor, or work on your 2D CAD skills for AutoCAD.

Enrolment on the course entitles you to download a free copy of Revit, for educational purposes, from Autodesk.

It is assumed that you already have a suitable computer to use this on – if you can’t / don’t want to use the college’s CAD Windows computers, Mac computers can be used, simply call / email for further information.
