This apprenticeship will teach you the key competencies that aspiring and new Managers need to successfully lead a team. You will learn how to plan and monitor workloads and build professional relationships.

On successful completion of the programme, apprentices gain:

  • Chartered Management Institute, CMI, Diploma in the Principles of Leadership and Management
  • CMI Foundation Chartered Manager status.

Your key responsibilities are likely to include supporting, managing and developing team members, managing projects, planning and monitoring workloads and resources, delivering operational plans, resolving problems and building relationships internally and externally.

What you'll learn

You and your employer will be able to select relevant units during the course of the Apprenticeship which leads to the achievement of the CMI Level 3 Diploma in Principals of Management and Leadership. An example of units covered in this qualification are:

The Apprenticeship teaches skills in:

Interpersonal Excellence – managing people and developing relationships

  • Leading People – for example understand different leadership styles and develop the skills to support people and improve performance
  • Managing People – for example understand people and team management models, team dynamics and motivation techniques and develop skills for setting operational and personal goals
  • Building Relationships – for example, understand approaches to customer and stakeholder relationship management and develop skills for effective negotiation and influencing
  • Communication – understand different forms of communication and their application and develop the ability and skills to communicate effectively, including chairing meetings

Organisational Performance – delivering results

  • Operational Management – understand how organisational strategy is developed and learn skills for creating team action plans and organising, prioritising and allocating work
  • Project Management – understand the project lifecycle roles and develop the ability to deliver a project including managing resources, identifying risks and issues
  • Finance – understanding organisational governance and compliance and how to deliver value for money through budgeting and effective controls

Personal Effectiveness – managing self

  • Self-Awareness – including how to be self-aware and the ability to reflect on own performance
  • Management of Self – ability to create an effective personal development plan and use time management techniques
  • Decision Making – understanding and using  problem solving and decision making techniques, including analysing data to support decision making

Entry requirements

The entry requirements for the Team Leader Apprenticeship are:

  • Must either be in a management / team leader role i.e. Supervisor, Team Leader or Shift Manager or working towards it.
  • Must have Level 2 Functional Skills in English and Math or GCSE (or equivalents) at grades C or above. Apprentices without level 2 English and Maths will need to achieve this level prior to taking the End Point Assessment

To help determine whether this programme is suitable you must be able to answer “yes” to the following questions:

  • You will have operational/project responsibility for managing a team.
  • You have clear responsibility for delivering operational plans.
  • You provide a team with clear direction, instructions and guidance to achieve set goals.
  • You have responsibility for performance management of a team.
  • You need to build relationships internally and externally.
  • You will have key responsibility for supporting, managing and developing, planning and monitoring team members’ workloads and resolving problems within and/or across teams.

How is the course delivered and assessed?

The Apprenticeship will have an integrated approach to the assessment of knowledge, skills and behaviours outlined in the Team Leader Apprenticeship Standard.

Learners need apprenticeship programs that resonate with their day-to-day life. In keeping with this, we offer a blended approach providing a part-time, 17-week diploma classroom sessions and online learning giving you a chance to study alongside your work.  Alternatively and to suit individual/employer needs, we can offer a workbook / on-line learning option.    Both will give you the skills essential for effective management and develop the core set of skills you need to be competent in your role which can be applied in the workplace. In addition, you will be required to complete CMI assignments in the workplace.

During the apprenticeship, you will have a dedicated Assessor who will visit you within the workplace at least once per month in order to support your learning, development of competency and generation of evidence. This will also be supported between visits by any off-site advice and guidance and academic progress support

During the programme apprentices are required to spend 20% of time at work on off-the-job learning.

Therefore, the Team Leader / Supervisor Apprenticeship programme will include:

  • Knowledge units, Introducing management theory and fundamentals, through a combination of online learning and practical classroom sessions.
  • On-programme assignments for the CMI diploma.
  • A work-based portfolio showcasing how apprentices have demonstrated the skills they have learned in real work projects.

At the end of your apprenticeship, you will complete an endpoint assessment with an external assessor to gain your apprenticeship certificate. Your Assessor, with support from your employer, will prepare and guide you through this process to ensure you have met the learning outcomes of the programme.  Outcome of endpoint assessment will determine Fail, Pass, Merit or Distinction.

This course will equip you with the skills and knowledge of different management styles to enable you to practically apply these in the workplace.  Future career and study opportunities may include:

  • Progression onto Operational departmental manager apprenticeship standard
  • Foundation Chartered Management Status – By continuing your CMI membership as a Foundation Chartered Manager after your studies, you’ll not only stand out when applying for jobs or promotions, but you’ll also be on your way to becoming a fully-fledged Chartered Manager – the ultimate and most prestigious distinction for any professional manager or leader. Your Foundation journey, aligned to all the key skills and behaviours employers need, will help you build your Chartered Manager submission over time as you gain experience, so when you’re ready for assessment all the hard work is already done. With ‘fCMgr’ after your name, your CV will demonstrate your commitment to your ongoing development.
