CAD: 3D Max Advanced - Advanced 3D Animation and Photorealistic Rendering

Awarding Body

About the course

The second of two advanced 3ds Max courses, this module is suitable for more experienced 3D Studio MAX users, building on the core skills learnt in the first advanced 3Ds course. Under the guidance of an Autodesk Approved Instructor, through hands on practical's using 3Ds Max the course aims to teach you the additional skills, modelling strategies and analytical ability necessary to produce photorealistic renders and animated imagery for commercial purposes.

Entry Requirements

3D rendering and general CAD experience is required, though you don't necessarily have to have done the first course in the series. Interviews are required for this course. Initial interviews are held on Tuesdays at 4pm in the CAD room at College Green (Room 6W9); if successful this will be followed by a second interview with the course tutor. You don't need to book in advance for the first interview, but allow at least 1 hour  - the time required depends on the number of interviewees who arrive.

  • knowledge of modelling and rendering in another 3D CAD program e.g. Revit, Sketchup, etc.
  • are a capable 3D user of AutoCAD, including rendering in AutoCAD
  • a suitable aptitude for advanced 3D work based on previous experience
What will I do on this course?

You will learn how to:

  • Use the curve and dope graph editors to control key frames
  • Create animations and previews using keyframing and adjusting track and key information
  • Create and apply paths to objects, cameras and lights
  • Plan and implement 3D scenes using photorealistic techniques
  • Compile animations from rendered frames at appropriate resolutions for TV
  • Camera match scenes to add computer generated images to  'real life' images
  • Use advanced modelling / rendering techniques to produce photorealistic imagery  - e.g. using: HDRI images for lighting, sub-surface scattering, etc
  • Create dummy objects and apply hierarchy
  • Analyse how to solve quality issues in the production of high quality renders
Who is it for?

This course is for the aspiring professional visualizers / designers / game / film artists, or advanced CAD users wanting to expand their awareness of the professional use of 3Ds Max for computer animation and photorealistic rendering and its use in successfully demonstrating creative concepts or created 3D imagery to others. It is a cross-industry course suitable for: architects, designers, engineers, game / film environment artists and other aspiring visualisation specialists.

How Is this course assessed?

100% coursework, through a series of three assignments. These are based on the modelling choice of the individual learners, in line with the parameters of the assignment briefs. This allows pursuit of individual particular interests in 3ds Max use, e.g. architectural, product design, film, game, etc. biases to the 3D modelling, rendering and animation undertaken.

What could I do next?

You can progress to Flexi CAD courses in 3D packages or FdA Interactive Multimedia with Graphic Design.
